Writing for IT

Just like a sommelier, a writer must be sensitive to subtleties, such as writing to audiences with different tastes and expectations. Excellent writing skills are an important asset to possess in any area of expertise. For jobs writing to the IT industry specifically, many employers are looking for someone who can write clearly and be able to appeal to a broad audience, all the while capturing the details that set IT writing apart in its field.

Working on your own writing projects these days? Here are some tips for sophisticated IT writing published by the Data Center Journal:

1. Use the active voice. While passive voice avoids taking action for the statements being made, active voice commands the full use of the verbs being employed and is also more effective and easier to read.

2. Keep your style boring. Avoid using fancy language and stick to the content. By spicing up the language too much, your writing will lose its importance.

3. Hyphenate compound adjectives to promote clarity. Mastering the use of hyphens is a useful tool in order to make your writing more clear.

4. Read your work aloud.  Once you read your work out-loud, it will be easier to identify run-on sentences and other mistakes you may have made.

5. Get help. When writing something important it is always beneficial to have someone else review your work. Feedback from a separate set of eyes will give you another perspective on your writing.

6. Invest in a style guide. For someone that does a lot of writing, using a style guide can be a helpful refresher of all the important rules of writing.
