This October, Internet peering service provider France-IX, announced their partnership with Hurricane Electric in Marseille. HE provided additional comment on this point of exchange, one of many in its robust network. From the article:
Company aims to increase service within the EMEA region.
Internet peering service provider France-IX has signed Hurricane Electric as its first internet exchange point (IXP) marketplace partner in its Marseille location.
Hurricane Electric, a global IPv4 and IPv6 network provider, will use the Marseille location in the south of France to service customers within the EMEA region.
Users of the France-IX IXP comprise 29 interconnected networks including those originating from France and serving local markets and also nationwide operators and operators from the US, Europe and increasingly from Middle-East and Africa.
France-IX has had a presence in Marseille since 2012. The company used SFR Netcenter data centre which has been acquired by Interxion in August 2014.
The data centre, renamed MRS1 at the time, is being modernised in a €45m investment plan by Interxion. Once fully built, the hub will boost 6200 sqm of colocation space and 16MW of dual grid connection. Backup power can last for about 72 hours with the use of a N+1 generators.
In addition to Marseille, Hurricane has also joined the France-IX marketplace in Paris, where it reaches a community of 320+ networks from various and diverse organizations.

“Hurricane Electric can provision IP transit by the gigabit to any member of France-IX within the span of a few days. France-IX members ask the internet exchange for the set-up of a private VLAN between our port and theirs and we provide the service within 24 hours.
“With the marketplace programme, we are also able to meet requests from more networks, as the France-IX infrastructure is spread out over two data centres in Marseille – Interxion and Jaguar Network.”
Franck Simon, Managing Director at France-IX, said: “Marseille was already connected with multiple cables going to the African continent, the Middle-East and further afield into Asia.
“More of these cables, with even bigger capacities, are expected to be rolled out by the end of 2016 and into the beginning of 2017.”
Hurricane Electric has been eyeing the EMEA market for the last few months. In September, the company opened a point-of-presence (PoP) in Bettembourg, Luxembourg, at LuxConnect’s DC1.1 data centre.
According to Hurricane Electric, with the opening of the PoP, LuxConnect customers will be able to exchange IP traffic with the company’s global network.
