December/2015
Dear Adam :
Happy Holidays from Milldam Public Relations!
December’s Milldam Monthly celebrates the season with the return of the always popular Holiday Gift Guide! This year’s list includes many of the tech gadgets you’ll want to consider while holiday shopping for others……..or even yourself.
In addition, the newsletter offers a fascinating visual history of the transformation of Silicon Valley: from verdant orchards to the high-tech center we recognize today. The seeds of America’s technology heartland were planted in what was once some of the country’s most fertile farmland.
We’ve kept up a busy December, wrapping up year-end projects and planning campaigns for launch in 2016. But, I still managed to swing through Gartner Data Center, one of the industry’s premier conferences held annually in Las Vegas. It was a great event to end our travel for 2015!
As always, if you are looking for PR advice or have questions regarding marketing strategy, please feel free to reach out. In the meantime, follow us on our social media channels to stay informed about what Milldam Public Relations and our clients are up to.
Best Wishes for a Safe and Happy Holiday Season!

HUMAN INTEREST
Silicon Valley: From Prune Orchards to Capital of the Connected World

Present-day Silicon Valley is considered the center of the tech universe. But before companies such as Facebook and Yahoo were able to call the area home, it was known as the “Valley of Heart’s Delight” for its abundance of flowers and orchards. Prior to the growth of the computer industry, the fertile valley supplied one-third of the world’s prunes!
The tech hub began to form in the mid-1800’s when the San Francisco Bay Area became a center for military and commercial ships and overflowed with early telegraph and radio industries. Continuing its growth after the Second World War, William Shockley founded Shockley Semiconductor Labs in Mountain View, California — one of the major cities that makes up today’s Silicon Valley. Shockley Labs was the first-ever company to make transistors out of silicon rather than germanium, and was a critical step in changing the region’s identity from agriculture to technology.
At the same time, Stanford University was encouraging its graduates to stay local and help develop California under the concept of “regional solidarity.” Some of these graduates would go on to co-found or finance large companies such as Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA.
After the creation of the microprocessor and early home computers, the valley experienced rapid growth in the mid-eighties  and was home to new companies such as Apple, Oracle, Cisco Systems, and Sun Microsystems.
Once PCs and the Internet became mainstream, 1995-2000 welcomed Google, Yahoo, and eBay to Silicon Valley. The southern San Francisco Bay Area is still known for its agriculture, but today the “Valley of Heart’s Delight” is more recognized for its technological innovation than its prunes.
