Issue: #37 Sept./2015

Welcome to the September edition of the Milldam Monthly. The beginning of fall also marks the beginning of the busy conference and trade show season, and this month’s newsletter explores how to better equip you to network with strangers. Our  Human Interest story examines the unspoken social cues that can help start a conversation with a potential client or contact.
As the weather gets colder and our work schedules get busier, you might find yourself unwinding with a movie or show on Netflix. But have you thought about what you can learn about PR from the video-streaming powerhouse?   Our PR Tip Of The Month explores the public relations successes and missteps that the media giant has encountered.

Be on the lookout! The Milldam staff will be on the road over the next couple of weeks, attending conferences and trade shows that you may also be attending. Catch up with us in:
As always, if you are looking for PR advice or have questions regarding marketing strategy, please feel free to reach out. In the meantime, follow us on our social media channels to stay informed about what Milldam Public Relations and our clients are up to this month!

How To Read a Room
Before taking a look at our upcoming industry events, read up on how to network your way through a room of strangers.
Paying close attention to social cues such as sounds or behavioral details can help you find which people to engage in conversation….and those to avoid. Whether it’s the person hovering over their cell phone in the corner or the loud group high-fiving each other, by reading the room before diving in among the masses, you can leave an upcoming conference with a handful of new business contacts.

PR Lessons from Netflix
Before Netflix became a household name, they experienced the many ups and downs of a new company trying to “make it.” But like any good company, Netflix analyzed their good, bad, and potentially ugly PR moves to ultimately create the public image we know and love. By reading these tips, you can also learn from some of the  trials and triumphs of our favorite companion on Friday nights:

Always Be Transparent With The Public
Netflix lost the trust of their customers when they split their service into two separate sites, causing an inconvenience for users. If Netflix was open with their customers and explained why they made the changes and what the changes entailed, they likely wouldn’t have received as much backlash. Before making any big business decisions that will affect your customers, weigh out the pros and cons of the decision.

If You Want to Stay Relevant, Change With the Times
Netflix started out as a DVD rental company, but added the online streaming service when the demand for DVD rentals declined. This smart move turned Netflix into the largest and most popular online streaming website in their market. By staying relevant and taking a risk, they became very successful. Once their competitors launched similar services, Netflix fought their way back to the top by creating their own award-winning shows.

Damage Control Will Always Be Important
Public Relations professionals are no strangers to damage control. Netflix was in trouble with their customers when they raised their monthly prices. Their stock sank and customers were voicing their complaints. As a result, Netflix launched innovative marketing efforts to keep current customers satisfied and created new benefits and services to make-up for the price increase. Taking the time to keep current customers happy is always important before looking to gain new ones.
