Bluestone Energy’s Director of Lighting Gabriel Andreson Recently wrote an article for Environmental Design and Construction magazine titled “An Aerial View of High Intensity Fluorescents vs. LEDs”  in which he reviews the pros and cons of the two lighting technologies. From the article:

National-DCP-2-12300The limitations of High Intensity Fluorescents and recent improvements in LED technology have caused LEDs to be a superior alternative in many cases. LED high bay fixtures generally use less energy than their HIF counterparts while producing a similar white light with good color rendering characteristics. Most LED high bay fixtures are rated for 50,000 hours in normal ambient temperature environments. Although the rated life of LEDs is often drastically reduced at temperatures beyond around 130 F, in cold environments the rated life of an LED is extended and light output is actually increased beyond rated output. In addition, LED fixtures have an advantage over their HIF predecessors because frequent switching does not affect the life rating of LEDs.
